The Scottish Arts Council (SAC)
Collecting initiative was launched in May 1996. Its aim was to gift the
2000 works which form the SAC art collection to museums and galleries all over
Scotland. Its main purpose was to make the work more accessible to the
public and to encourage museums and galleries to collect more contemporary
Scottish Art.
The SAC Collection which was begun in the 1950's contains paintings, drawings,
prints, sculptures, installations and tapestries. Artists including Joan Eardley, Anne Redpath, J D Ferguson, John Byrne, Will MacLean, Eduardo Paolozzi,
Christine Borkland, Julie Roberts, Nathan Coley and Calum Colvin are represented
in the collection.
After receiving wide ranging applications from museums and galleries from the
islands to the Scottish Borders, 1,645 works were gifted to over 60
institutions, including Highland Council, during the first phase of the project.
Since then Highland Council have dispersed the works to public sites across the
region, as well as using the collection as a resource for exhibitions and
related projects.
