The Highland Literacy Project focuses on the methodologies employed in the teaching of Literacy which allow the pupils to become increasingly independent learners. It is both ‘whole school’ and cross curricular. All aspects of literacy are intertwined; reading and writing are firmly connected and are underpinned by structured talking and listening and the use of collaborative strategies.

The HLP is, and continues to be, based on extensive research from around the globe, taking account of the good practice in the Highlands and across Scotland. Over the course of the project, the strategies have been adapted, developed and extended to meet the needs of both teachers and pupils and to take into account advice from HMIe and developments in AifL and a Curriculum for Excellence.

The Highland Literacy Project materials are available freely for use. We do, however, ask that you acknowledge Highland Council when doing so.

If you require any further information, please contact Clifford Cooke, Quality Improvement Officer, Highland Council. clifford.cooke@highland.gov.uk
